Today's topic is about the financial supports for university students because I promised to one of my reader.
Az egyetemi pénzügyi támogatás attól függ, honnan jött a diák (UK, EU, Nemzetközi- International), mióta él az Egyesült Királyságban és milyen az anyagi háttere.
Financial support depends on where the student came from (UK, EU, International) how long has he/she lives in UK and how is the financial background.
Magyarország az EU-ba tartozik, nem a nemzetközi kategóriába (ez nem egyértelmű). Ha nincs külön feltüntetve valahol az EU, csak a UK, vagy International akkor külön rá kell kérdezni, mi vonatkozik az EU-s tanulókra.
As Hungary is part of the EU, it does not belong to the International category (it is not obvious). If there is not a EU category just UK or International you should ask about what rules apply to EU students.
Sajnos aki akkor kezdené az egyetemet amikor kiköltözik UK-be, az csak a Bursaryt (szociális támogatás) és a Diákhitelt kaphat. Ha már valaki 3 éve lakik UK-ben mielőtt (!) megkezdi az egyetemi tanulmányait, akkor ő a legtöbb támogatást megkaphatja, ugyanúgy mint egy angol állampolgár. Ezeket a támogatásokat csak listázom, hiszen a legtöbben nem ebben a helyzetben vagyunk.
Unfortunately who starts the university when moving to UK, those can apply only for the bursary and the student loan. If someone lives minimum 3 years in UK before starting a course, he/she can apply for most of the benefits like a British citizen. I just list these benefits because most of us are not in this situation.
- Maintenance grant- Ennek az összege maximum £3250 azok a tanulók kaphatják akik szüleinek éves jövedelme kevesebb mint £25000.
The maximum amount of this can be £3250 and this is available for those students whose parents' income is less than £25000/year.
Több információ/More information: Maintenance grant- Directgov - Maintenance loan- Ennek az összege £4375-£6375, attól függően, hogy hol laksz, a szüleid bevétele, milyen évfolyamba jársz és hogy jár-e a maintenance grant.
It can be £4375-£6375 depending on where you live, your parents' income, what year of studying you are in, what help you get through the maintenance grant.
Több információ/More information: Maintenance loan- Directgov - Special support grant- Ez a maintenance grant helyett van, azoknak akik egyedülálló szülők, bizonyos fogyatékosággal rendelkezők, vagy a párjuk is tanuló, melyet akkor lehet megigényelni hogyha a jövedelmed nem halad meg egy adott összeget. Ennek az összege is kb. £3250 mint a maintenance grant-nek, de ez a körülményektől függ.
Special support grant can be given instead of the maintenance grant for those people who are single parents, have certain disabilities, and their partner is also a student. If their income does not exceed a level they are entitled to apply for this support . The support can be the same amount as the maintenance grant approx. £3250 but it depends on the circumstances.

A bursary-nek a szótár szerint más jelentése van, de szerintem a legjobban mint szociális támogatás írható le. Ezt az egyetemtől kell megigényelni, nem a diákhitel cégtől, és az összeg is változhat egyetemtől függően. A pénzt készpénzben (ezt nehezen hiszem el, de ezt olvastam) vagy pedig bankkártyára utalják nem egy összegben. A mi egyetemünk 3 részben küldi a támogatást, azt hiszem maximum £1000 összegben. Azt hittem sokkal több információt fogok találni a bursary-ről, de ennyit találtam, és az egyetemünk honlapján pedig semmit nem találtam :(
You have to apply for a bursary through the university not from the Student Finance Company and the amount of money can vary depending on universities. I read that you can get it in cash (I do not think so) or to your bank account and they send it in a few instalments. My university send it in three instalments and maximum £1000. I thought I will find more information about bursary, I do not even find more on my university's website.
Tehát a támogatásokra nem nagyon lehet számítani, ezért csak munkával lehet magunkat fenntartani. Úgy tudom, semmiféle megkötés nincs a munkaórák számát illetően. Mivel minden ember más, más képességekkel, ezért azt sem mondhatom ki hány órát kell dolgozni. Az én szakomon, másodévben, heti 14 órát kellett a suliban tölteni ez csak az előadásokat és szemináriumokat tartalmazza. Persze ha prezentációt, csoportos munkát kell megoldani az plusz idő. Vizsgaidőszakban pedig mindenki a könyvtárban él. :)
Azt is figyelembe kell venni, hogy 21 év fölött £6.08, 18-21 évig £4.98 a minimum órabér. A munkakeresésről és egyéb várható pénzügyi kiadásokról itt írtam. Általában az egyetemeknek van egy munkaközvetítő ügynöksége (student employment agency) ahova egy egyszerű regisztrációval be kerülhetünk az adatbázisba. De a nyílt napokon, beiratkozáskor az ilyen dolgokat el szokták magyarázni bővebben.
You cannot really rely on financial supports, so you have to work. I think that there is not any rule about working hours. Everybody is different with different capabilities I cannot say how many hours you have to work. On my course, on the second year I had to spend 14 hours on the uni which includes lectures and seminars. Of course if we get extra tasks like group work, presentation it requires more time. Obviously everybody lives in the library in exam period :)
You also have to consider that the minimum wage is £6.08 aged 21 or over and £4.98 between 18-21. I wrote a blog post about looking for a job and estimated financial expenditures here.
